This certificate is designed to provide students with the conversational competency in ASL to communicate with deaf and hard of hearing individuals who use ASL as their primary mode of communication. In addition, students completing the certificate program would have the prerequisite skills to seek further instruction in Interpreter Education.

More specifically, the certificate program is designed for individuals who wish to enhance their ability to communicate with the Deaf community and to enhance their employment potential, including undergraduate students majoring in communication sciences and disorders, general and special education, psychology, theater, the health professions, and other disciplines; students at area community colleges; professionals working in Central Florida; and the general public.

Certificates will be awarded only at the time of degree completion.

Other Requirements

  • A minimum grade of “C-” (1.75) is required in each course.
  • Students must earn an overall GPA of 2.0 in courses used to complete the certificate.
  • At least 8 hours used in the program must be earned at UCF with the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.
  • No credit by exam (TSD, Military credit) Internship or Independent Study credit may be used toward the certificate.
