College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST)

The College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) is designed to ensure that students have achieved communication and computation skills commensurate with successful completion of the lower-division coursework. All students seeking an Associate of Arts or baccalaureate degree from a state of Florida institution are required by the state of Florida to satisfy the CLAST requirement. There are several methods by which students may meet this requirement. Students who have completed 18 or more credit hours are eligible to take the CLAST. Students must complete the CLAST requirement prior to the end of their sophomore year in college. An appeal to continue enrollment may be submitted to the CLAST Petition Committee (PH 106). CLAST is given 3 times per year (February, June, and October) as established by the Commissioner of Education. Additionally, students may retake the English Language Skills, Reading, and/or Mathematics subtests of CLAST on computer at the University Testing Center, PH 106. A fee will be charged for the computeradapted CLAST (CAT-CLAST). Information regarding preparation for the CLAST may be obtained from the Student Academic Resource Center (PH 115) at 407 823 5130. Academic advising offices can answer questions students may have regarding the CLAST. There are several methods by which students may meet this requirement, but applicants for teacher certification must check with the College of Education to determine if they are eligible for alternatives. Students with 60 or more credit hours who have not taken the CLAST may be restricted from future registration. Students who have not passed all four subtests of the CLAST may enroll in 36 credit hours of upper division credit. If the CLAST requirement has not been satisfied and the 36 hours of upper division credit have been registered for and/or earned, enrollment in future semesters/terms at UCF will be prohibited until the CLAST requirement has been met.

Transfer Students with more than 60 credit hours who have not taken the CLAST or who have not met the CLAST requirement may be admitted, but they must take the CLAST exam during their first term at UCF. If the CLAST requirement has not been satisfied and the 36 hours of upper division credit have been registered for and/or earned, enrollment in future semesters/terms at UCF will be prohibited until the CLAST requirement has been met.

CLAST Alternatives

Beginning January 1, 1996, the following alternatives have been approved to meet statewide requirements of the Florida CLAST. Students who plan to major in a teacher education program must check with the College of Education to determine if they are eligible for alternatives. A student who earns a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above, on a 4.0 scale, in postsecondary-level in English and Mathematics coursework identified by the Postsecondary Education Planning Commission, shall be exempt from the requirement for passing the CLAST subtest in question.

SAT Scores:

A student who earns a quantitative score of 500 or above is exempt from the Math section of CLAST; any student who earns a verbal score of 500 or above is exempt from the English Language Skills, Reading, and Essay sections of CLAST.

ACT Scores:

A student who earns a score of 21 or above on the Math section is exempt from the Math section of CLAST; any student who earns a score of 22 or above on the Reading section is exempt from the Reading section of CLAST; any student who earns a score of 21 or above on the English section is exempt from the English Language Skills and Essay sections of CLAST.

CLAST Waiver Petitions for Student with Disabilities

Students with disabilities may request reasonable accommodations while taking the CLAST. Those who are unable to pass a subtest of the CLAST due to disability can request that a subtest be waived. The student must be registered with the Student Disability Services Office (FC 132) and have on file documentation of his or her disability. Contact the Student Success Center (PH 216) to complete a petition to waive a CLAST subtest. The CLAST Waiver Committee reviews all requests for waivers on a casebycase basis.
